Chris Eubank Biography

Chris Eubank is a former British professional boxer who ran the WBO middleweight and super-middleweight titles between 1990 and 1995 and is ranked by BoxRec as the 3rd best British super-middleweight boxer of all time.

Eubank made a fresh start in New York, battling drug, alcohol, and shoplifting addictions for church and school attendance.[citation needed] In his spare time he practiced at the Jerome Boxing Club on Westchester Avenue, following in the footsteps of his boxing elder brothers back in England.

Eubank was fascinated with boxing fitness and went regularly to the gym, also as a caretaker to pay for his journey. He won the Spanish Golden Gloves Tournament in 1984 and even reached the semi-final stage of Madison Square Garden ‘s annual Golden Gloves tourney at age 18. In his autobiography, he writes that his drive for boxing success came through his drive to become an accepted individual, largely caused by subjective bullying from his older brothers.

Upon his return to England, he lived in a largely impoverished environment in Stoke Newington, Dalston, Hackney, and then Peckham. When he was 16, his father sent him to live with his mother in the harsh South Bronx district in New York, the United States. In 2015, Eubank adopted his deceased father ‘s nickname, “English,” to secretly preserve his memory and publicly differentiate himself from his son Chris Jr. ‘s burgeoning boxing career.

Chris Eubank and Calzaghe

When Steve Collins withdrew from his WBO super-middleweight title defense against Joe Calzaghe and retired abruptly in October 1997, Calzaghe was matched with eleven days’ notice against Eubank for the vacant title. Eubank was scheduled to box on the undercard at light-heavyweight. Eubank was knocked down twice and lost to Calzaghe on points, but he saw his popularity grow as a result of managing to finish the fight against his more fanciful opponent.

Chris Eubank WBO middleweight champion

In a classic encounter that was later released on DVD, Eubank won the WBO middleweight title against Nigel Benn (and the odds): a grueling battle that ended when Benn (ahead on points but only narrowly) stopped at his feet near the end of round 9. Eubank would successfully defend the title against Dan Sherry (in a fight shortened by a headbutt for which Eubank has penalized 2 points but still gained points over the 9 rounds), fellow Briton Gary Stretch and finally in an excellent match with another British fellow, Michael Watson, battling him in favor of Eubank with a tight 12-run majority decision. It ended Eubank ‘s career as a middleweight, with a record of 28–0.

Chris Eubank Career

He reigned for over five years as world champion was unbeaten as a professional in his first ten years and remained unbeaten at middleweight. His world title fights against fellow Britons Nigel Benn and Michael Watson helped British boxing ride a wave of popularity in the 1990s, making Eubank one of the most famous celebrities of the time. He challenged then-up and coming challenger Joe Calzaghe in his final two years of boxing in an attempt to win his WBO super-middleweight belt, with a triumphant Calzaghe later saying it was the hardest fight of all his career.

The last two fights Eubank had fought against WBO junior-heavyweight champion Carl Thompson, both of whom were rough battles. For the first time and only time in his career, Eubank has been stopped in the rematch. Eubank is credited for his bravery in the ring, where he was able to take considerable amounts of punishment from power punchers en route to his victories and defeats, and for that, he is said to have a “granite” chin. His son, Chris Eubank Jr., is also a professional boxer.

Chris Eubank Truck

On 14 October 2003, while driving around Parliament Square, Westminster, police intercepted Eubank in his truck, displaying the message “TONY BLAIR! MILITARY OCCUPATION CAUSES TERRORISM.” Before he was arrested he completed several circuits. On 22 February 2007, Eubank was arrested in Whitehall outside the Horse Guards Parade for a possible breach of peace after driving in his truck through central London, emblazoned with a letter condemning Tony Blair for sending Prince Harry to Iraq.

The banner read “BLAIR – Don’t send our young prince to your catastrophic illegal war, to make it look plausible!” On 23 May 2007, he was charged with making an unlawful anti-war protest after parking his seven-ton truck outside Downing Street. On 16 November 2007, he failed to show up at court, so an arrest warrant was issued, and he was fined.
