Chris Cuthbert TSN Sportscaster

Cuthbert joined CBC Sports in 1984, where he created regional western games for Hockey Night in Canada, typically from Edmonton. He also had spot play-by-play assignments when the network’s main western announcer, Don Wittman, was covering other activities on the network, or when the schedule had to be ready.

Cuthbert’s contract was revoked on 24 February 2005 by Nancy Lee, Executive Director of CBC Sports. There was a great deal of outrage at his firing. Some criticized Lee, who had created the position Manager of Program Acquisitions for CBC Sports to hire her friend Sue Prestedge.  It was also believed that Cuthbert’s strong opposition, when CBC chose to drop its popular Hockey Day in Canada broadcast, did not endear himself to Lee. This decision was greatly criticized, as rival network TSN staged a Hockey Day of its own.

He joined TSN in 2005 he became TSN’s lead CFL football voice; serving as one of the network’s hockey play-by-play voices. Since TSN gained the exclusive television rights to the CFL starting in 2008, Cuthbert returned to his role as the primary voice of the CFL on TSN and calls every Grey Cup. Cuthbert made the history of the National Hockey League on December 1, 2006, as the first play-by-play announcer in the history of the NHL to purposely call an ice-level game instead of a cable gondola.

He dubbed the Buffalo Sabres/New York Rangers game at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York, along with Glenn Healy. “It was a good show, as per the Globe and Mail, and it’s impossible to be the last one. He was the play-by-play announcer for men’s ice hockey at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang alongside Ray Ferraro.
