Charles Newby (Chas Newby) was a British musician who was born on June 18, 1941. He was the Beatles’ bassist for a short time, filling in for Stuart Sutcliffe, who was concentrating on his art career in Hamburg, Germany at the time.
The Beatles were without a bass guitarist when they returned from their first tour to West Germany. Pete Best, a Beatles member at the time who had previously performed with Newby in a band called The Black Jacks, proposed bringing in Chas Newby.
Despite the fact that he was a university student on vacation, Newby agreed to join the Beatles and play bass for them.
Chas Newby joined the Beatles for four shows in December 1960. These shows took held on December 17 at Liverpool’s Casbah Club, December 24 at Liscard’s Grosvenor Ballroom, December 27 at Litherland Town Hall, and December 31 at Liverpool’s Casbah Club.
Following these performances, John Lennon invited Newby to accompany the band on their second trip to West Germany, but Newby chose to return to his academic studies. Following Newby’s departure, Paul McCartney, who had previously played guitar and piano, reluctantly accepted the position of bass player for the Beatles.
