Charlotte Figi CBD

Figi’s mother, Paige Figi, began calling medical marijuana shops in Colorado. This was after doctors had exhausted all other options. Surprisingly her symptoms largely disappeared after she began taking oil infused with a strain of cannabis low in THC. The plant’s psychoactive ingredient, but high in the compound cannabidiol, or CBD. The oil’s name, inspired by her story, was changed to Charlotte’s Web.

Charlotte’s success led other families with children suffering from seizures to move to Colorado, where marijuana was legalized much earlier than other states.

Charlotte Figi Health Problems and Death

Figi had her first attack when she was three months old. When she was three years old, Charlotte had up to 300 Grand Mal attacks each week, this was too sad to the parents. She was diagnosed with Dravet syndrome and began to lose her ability to walk and speak. Her parents looked for medication all over that didn’t seem to help. Her mother found a cannabis dispensary in Denver that had a cannabis extract. It was said to be low in THC but high in CBD.  She gave Charlotte a small dose., after paying $ 800 for two ounces of oil,

“When she didn’t have those three, four seizures that first hour, that was the first sign,” Paige later told CNN. “And I thought well, ‘Let’s go another hour, this has got to be a fluke.’

But the seizures stopped for a week and then dropped to just two or three a month, and Charlotte was allowed to discontinue her other seizure medications. The Figi family began working with the Stanley brothers, six Colorado-based brothers who grew cannabis and were working on a strain high in CBD and low in THC. Extracts from those cultures were used to treat Charlotte and other seizure patients. The Stanley brothers called the Charlotte’s Web strain to honor the girl who inspired it. The Stanley brothers also established a nonprofit organization, the Realm of Caring Foundation, which donates cannabis to adults and children suffering from a variety of diseases and ailments.

Realm of Caring, the nonprofit that focuses on medical cannabis research and education, attributed Figi’s death to “COVID-19 complications” in a Facebook post. A message posted to the Facebook page of Charlotte’s mother, Paige Figi, on behalf of the Figi family says, “Charlotte is no longer suffering. She is seizure-free forever.”

Neither El Paso County nor state health officials have publicly announced the death of a 13-year-old Coloradan due to COVID-19; Charlotte would be the youngest person to date to die in Colorado in connection with the coronavirus.

Charlotte was one of Colorado’s many medical marijuana refugees, whose family moved to the state following the legalization of cannabis. From the time she was an infant, she suffered from frequent and severe seizures because of Dravet syndrome, including many that required hospitalization. But at age 5, Paige Figi gave her cannabidiol, the non-psychoactive compound in cannabis known more commonly as CBD, and Charlotte’s condition changed overnight.

“Charlotte slept soundly for the first time in years. She went seven days without a seizure. Over time, the seizures dropped from thousands a month to just a few. After not speaking for six months, she started talking again,”
