Charles Pugh (born August 3, 1971) is an American television journalist, radio presenter, and politician who is best known for his ten-year stint as the weekend anchor at WJBK in Detroit from 1999 to 2009. Pugh is a member of the Democratic Party in the United States. Pugh was elected as the president of the Detroit City Council at the 2009 municipal elections in the city of Detroit. He also worked as a radio personality, appearing on shows like as CoCo, Foolish, and Mr. Chase in the Morning, as well as his own talk programme, That’s What’s Up, which initially aired on WJLB on Sunday nights.

After coming out as homosexual in 2004, Pugh became the first openly gay elected official in the city’s history. Pugh resigned from his position as a police officer in March 2009 to focus on his political campaign. Although he admitted that he had been suffering financially and that his house had been repossessed late in the campaign and received the most votes of any council candidate on election day, he was elected council president despite a scandal surrounding him late in the campaign.

After engaging in what local media referred to as a “Twitter battle” with an intern at Automotive News, Pugh made headlines in 2012. Following a short dispute on social media, Pugh sent a tweet to Automotive News, asking that they talk with the intern about his “offensive” tweets. The intern did not respond. Pugh’s actions were roundly criticised. It was reported on June 26, 2013, that while serving as president of the Detroit City Council, Pugh had an improper connection with a 17-year-old high school student boy whom he mentored, prompting him to make headlines once again.

A spokesperson for the family, Skip Mongo, told reporters that Pugh “was in a position of power at the time and he attempted to seduce this young guy.” As soon as the accusations were made public, Pugh went into hiding and requested a four-week medical vacation, which was ultimately rejected. On June 27, 2013, Detroit’s emergency financial manager, Kevyn Orr, relieved Pugh of his duties and compensation as president of the Detroit City Council, effective immediately.

According to the police complaint, which was submitted on June 29, 2013, a girl claimed that Pugh had sexually abused her. During the month of September 2013, Pugh officially resigned from the Detroit City Council. Jessica Cooper, the Oakland County Prosecutor at the time, stated in December 2013 that she would not pursue charges against Pugh.
