Charles M. Poston, Sr. (February 14, 1898 – November 1968), was a railroad employee from Hornbeck, a small town in Vernon Parish in western Louisiana, who served a single term from 1960 to 1964 as a Democratic state senator from what is now District 30 (Beauregard, Calcasieu, Sabine, and Vernon parishes). At the time, Poston’s constituency did not include the current precincts in Calcasieu Parish.

Poston did not seek a second term in 1964; instead his son, Bryan A. Poston, a businessman also from Hornbeck, was elected to succeed him. Bryan Poston held the Senate seat from 1964 to 1992, when he retired and was replaced by James David Cain of Dry Creek in Beauregard Parish.

Poston’s Senate colleagues included, among others, Jamar Adcock of Ouachita Parish, Cecil R. Blair of Rapides Parish, Jackson B. Davis of Caddo Parish, Sylvan Friedman of Natchitoches Parish, J. C. Gilbert of Catahoula Parish, Speedy O. Long of La Salle Parish, B. H. “Johnny” Rogers of DeSoto Parish, and Harold Montgomery of Bossier and Webster parishes.

Poston was married to Marjorie M. Poston (1899–1995), who was also a railroad employee. In addition to son Bryan, the couple had two other sons, Charles M. Poston, Jr., and Morris O. Poston of Leesville, the seat of Vernon Parish.

Born Keinan Abdi Warsame on February 1, 1978 in Mogadishu, Somalia, he is better known by his stage name K’naan. K’naan rose to prominence with the success of his single Wavin’ Flag, chosen by Coca-Cola as a promotional anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. K’naan’s family was also artistic—his grandfather was a famous poet and his Aunt Magool a renowned singer. When his family relocated to the United States, then ultimately to Toronto, Canada, K’naan learned to speak English partly by listening to hip-hop music by artists like Nas and Rakim. K’naan’s first ‘in’ in the music business was when he became friends with Canadian promoter Sol Guy, who helped him secure his first speaking engagement before the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 1999, where K’naan performed a spoken word piece which criticized the UN (United Nations) for its failed peacekeeping missions to Somalia. This performance led to other UN events and helped K’naan meet Canadian producers Brian West and Jarvis Church. K’naan went on to tour and collaborate with such artists as Nelly Furtado, Mos Def, will.i.am, The Roots, Dead Prez and Pharoahe Monch. In addition to his artistic career, K’naan has shown his philanthropic side in such efforts as becoming a co-spokesman with singer/activist Bono to raise awareness of the 2011 drought in Eastern Africa and teaming up with Sol Guy to perform at various concerts in support of the same cause.
