What are the characteristics of LAN and WAN?
Difference between a LAN and a WAN
| LAN | WAN |
|---|---|
| LAN is a computer network that covers a small geographic area, like a home, office, or group of buildings. | WAN is a computer network that covers a broad area. For example, any network whose communications links cross-regional and metropolitan boundaries over a long distance. |

What are the characteristics of LAN?
Here are important characteristics of a LAN network:
- It is a private network, so an outside regulatory body never controls it.
- LAN operates at a relatively higher speed compared to other WAN systems.
- There are various kinds of media access control methods like token ring and ethernet.
What is LAN WAN man?
Definition. LAN stands for Local Area Network. MAN stands for Metropolitan Area Network. WAN stands for Wide Area Network. 2.
What are the importance of WAN?
A WAN provides a direct communication mechanism between satellite offices or two or more geographically diverse locations. Unlike Local Area Networks, or LANs, WANs are meant to bridge great distances and can be an exceptional communication strategy for the right organizations.
What is difference between LAN and WAN?
A LAN (local area network) is a group of computers and network devices connected together, usually within the same building. A WAN connects several LANs, and may be limited to an enterprise (a corporation or an organization) or accessible to the public.
Do I plug Ethernet into WAN or LAN?
The LAN ports are designed for connecting to local devices. Plug one Ethernet cable into your modem and the other end into your router’s WAN port. Then, plug your router’s power adapter into the wall.
What are the 2 types of LAN networks?
In general, there are two types of LANs: client/server LANs and peer-to-peer LANs. A client/server LAN consists of several devices (the clients) connected to a central server.
What are examples of LAN?
A network is a group of two or more connected computers, and a LAN is a network contained within a small geographic area, usually within the same building. Home WiFi networks and small business networks are common examples of LANs.
What are LAN used for?
A local-area network (LAN) connects the computer hardware in a localized area such as an office or home. Typically, LANs use wired connections to link the computers to each other and to a variety of peripheral devices such as printers.
What are the benefits of LAN?
Advantages of LAN
- Resource Sharing. Sharing of resources such as hard disk drives, DVD drives and Printers are made easy in Local Area Network.
- Software Sharing.
- Convenient Communication.
- Centralized Data.
- Improved Security.
- Internet Sharing.
- Computer Identification.
What are the advantages of LAN over WAN?
The further the distance, the slower the network. One of the big disadvantages to having a WAN is the cost it can incur. Having a private WAN can be expensive.
| Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|
| Allow for much larger and more intricate network Can cover near infinite geographical distance | Cost Speed Ease of Use |
What are 3 disadvantages of a WAN?
While WANS provide numerous advantages, they have their share of disadvantages. As with any technology, you need to be aware of these downsides to make an informed decision about WANS. The three most critical downsides are high setup costs, security concerns, and maintenance issues.
What are two main advantage of LAN?
Easy and Cheap Communication: Data and messages can easily be shared with the other computer connected to the network. Centralized Data: The data of all network users can be stored on a hard disk of the central/server computer. This help users to use any computer in a network to access the required data.
What is the disadvantage of WAN?
Disadvantages of a wide area network (WAN)
Security problems: Wide Area Networks faces more security problem as compare to LANs and MANs. The setup cost is high: A WAN network covers a large geographical area, it is very expensive to setup in the initial stage.
What are the limitation of LAN?
A typical LAN technology can span, at most, a few hundred meters. LANs are not designed for long distances. The need for fair access on shared media such as Ethernet and token ring limits the size of a LAN. – CSMA/CD doesn’t work satisfactorily when a network gets too big.
