Russell Hill’s widow feels she will never see her husband alive again after he vanished in the Victorian bush with Carol Clay about 15 months ago.
Mr. Hill, 74, and Ms. Clay, 73, went missing on March 20 last year while on a camping trip in East Gippsland, 350 kilometers east of Melbourne.
On March 21, campers discovered Mr. Hill’s vehicle with minimal fire damage at their entirely burned-out campsite near the Dry River Creek Track in the Wonnangatta Valley.
According to previous reports, the two were high school sweethearts, and Mr. Hill’s wife was unaware that Ms. Clay would be accompanying him on the camping trip.
Mrs. Hill stated that she and her husband had known Ms. Clay for over 50 years and attended her first wedding.
In an unexpected turn of events, authorities extended the search 80 kilometers northwest to the Mount Hotham area a fortnight ago, the first time the hunt had left Wonnangatta.
On April 14, detectives discovered two shovels in the heavy brush off the Great Alpine Road, and the search ended.
The shovels are still being forensically investigated, and the search has been turned back to the Wonnangatta campgrounds, where the pair initially went missing.
