Carlos Maza Steven Crowder
In June 2019, Youtube investigated conservative YouTube personality Steven Crowder for multiple uses of racist and homophobic slurs.
The slurs were said to be targeting Carlos in several videos reacting to the Vox series Strikethrough, which Carlos hosts. Carlos said that Crowder’s fans have doxxed and harassed him.
Steven Crowder responded with a video where he said that the investigation was a “war we will fight to the bitter end” and “this is an example of a giant, multinational media conglomeration … attempting to squash a competitor.”
Steven also said that his use of racial and homophobic slurs was “playful ribbing”.
Four days later, Youtube responded to the state of things between the two saying that the language, although ‘hurtful’, didn’t violate its policies and would not be removed from the site.
That decision drew considerable criticism and the next day, Youtube changed course saying that it decided to suspend Crowder’s ability to run ads on and monetize his videos.
Steven, on his show Louder with Crowder, bemoaned comments Carlos made to the Washington Post that YouTube was hypocritical for branding itself as a “queer space” while allowing Steven to remain on the platform.
“This guy, Carlos Maza, talked about how YouTube was a ‘queer space,” Steven said.
He went on to make further references to Carlos’ sexual orientation, before saying that YouTube appealing to the LGBT community was “corporate censorship.”
”Queer space’ makes up two percent of population earth, okay ass…You’re an ass because you encourage the milkshaking and battery and assault of people who disagree with you. That’s why I think you’re an ass, man. It has nothing to do with the fact that you’re an ass-man.”
“‘Queer space’, that’s two percent of population Earth. Contrast that with 50 percent who are conservative or right leaning.”
“YouTube is saying, okay, we can either appeal to everybody, the vast majority of the American public, the global public, who don’t want to see corporate censorship; or two percent because this guy thinks YouTube is a ‘queer space.”
