The slayings were among the country’s first serial killings. In June 1972, Carl also known as Raymond, injured a cop during a botched robbery attempt at a Santa Barbara grocery store.
As a result, he was arrested along with his family members and sentenced to five years in prison. Similarly, while they were serving time in California’s Folsom Prison, Colorado authorities accused them of murdering a waitress at a Lakewood doughnut shop.
She was found strangled, raped, and shot in the head.
McCrary and Carl admitted to Lakewood police that they had murdered three women in Texas, but the confessions were not admissible due to a legal snafu.
They were also responsible for the murder of Elizabeth Steffins, who went missing in Texas in September 1971. Her remains were discovered three months later.
And McCrary & Carl later confessed to killing her, according to the New Yorker. According to the reports in 1972, Mrs. Carolyn McCrary, 45, her son Danny, 19, and daughter Ginger McCrary Taylor, 22, were serving nine-month sentences in the Santa Barbara County Jail for fugitive harboring.
Mrs. Taylor gave birth to a son while incarcerated a week ago.

Notably, the son of one of the perpetrators, Jerry made a friend out of the daughter of one of the murder victims, Regina. The piece goes into detail about how she met Jerry, a relative of the killers.
When the family was arrested, Jerry was one of several children who were taken away from them. He was only five years old. He was in and out of foster care until 1976 when he and his brother were adopted.
It wasn’t until he was 29 years old, in 1995, that he learned about his family’s dark history. “Families Who Kill: The Donut Shop Murders,” a new podcast about the case, released its six episodes on February 2, here.
Who Is Sherman Mccrary?
Sherman McCrary was the main leader of the family who was involved in a serial killing in Southwestern states. He was the father-in-law of Carl Taylor as mentioned above.

He was imprisoned for the charge of kidnapping and murder of a waitress at a Lakewood doughnut shop in 1972. However, in 1988, McCrary committed suicide at the Fremont Correctional Facility, just an hour after speaking with guards on their rounds.
He was 62 years old at that time.
“I’m just old and tired and tired of doing time,” McCrary wrote in a suicide note. In 1997, he would have been eligible for parole.
