Carl Anthony Payne II Interview

INTERVIEW WITH CARL ANTHONY PAYNE ON PLAYING LA REID IN TLC BIOPIC

Published: NOVEMBER 6, 2013

Q: What role do you play in the new TLC biopic?

Carl Anthony Payne II: I play LA Reid. The “Great” LA Reid.

Q: What kind of relationship does LA Reid have with the members of TLC?

Carl Anthony Payne II: LA Reid, along with his wife Pebbles, was responsible for the launch of TLC’s careers. He was the driving force behind the group. Pebbles brought TLC  to him, pretty much. Did you also know that Pebbles is responsible for Usher, Babyface and even Bobby Brown’s career. As a matter of fact, LA Reid was brought in as a judge on X-Factor too. He’s an amazing music mogul.

Q: So you went to school in Howard University? Do you frequent the DMV often?

Carl Anthony Payne II: Not that often. I am usually really busy working. I was recently there for a month and a half. I was the ringmaster for the UniverSOUL circus and signed on to do it for a month and a half. I had a great time there! Enjoyed shopping and eating at Georgetown a lot. The cool spot for me was the national harbor.

Q: What’s your favorite spot in Baltimore?

Carl Anthony Payne II:  The best spot for me is down by the water since the harbor is my favorite spot. The restaurants are cool down there too.

Q: Do you still get recognized for your role as Theo’s best friend from “The Cosby Show”?

Carl Anthony Payne II: Everywhere I go! Since I did another show which is in syndication. Some recognize me from both or the other. It’s generational now, the gap is very wide. You can be 7 years old or even 60 and still recognize me from the show. Since they are both good shows, it’s  the best experience.

Q: Do you still keep in touche with Castmates from Martin?

Carl Anthony Payne II: Yeah! Tischina and Tommy. Tommy is a really, really good friend to me. He’s like a brother to me.

Q: What are your future projects like?

Carl Anthony Payne II: I’m developing a web series that deals with the world of motocross sports. I am in talks with several producers who are in talks with developing my own sitcom.

Q: Any last words?

Carl Anthony Payne II: For the record, I LOVE the DMV! When I was there, I had the most fun there! I appreciate the continual support from the area.  I also want to add that Hollywood is always changing and that people who are inspired to act should go out there. I also want to add that the TV we watch today is not what it used to be back then. We had quality shows that were inspiring, clean and made with effort. Now, most programs carry reality shows like “Real House Wives of New Jersey” and that doesn’t define reality. My goal and mission is to define reality by putting back quality TV. Shows like “Martin” and “The Cosby Show” are quality shows and that’s what we don’t have out there.

Q: Good point, I can see how reality TV takes over airtime.  Do you use social media? I know a lot of fans want to connect with you!

Carl Anthony Payne II: Yes, I have a Twitter @TheCarlPayne and I Instagram @The Real Carl Payne. If you must know, I actually hate social media. It’s so silly to me and I mean, I get it. However, I don’t think it’s good or even a necessity for a lot of different reasons.
