Anicka Newell Almost Got The Bronze In Commonwealth Games 2022
As Alysha Newman withdrew after also getting hurt, leaving five competitors vying for three medals, Imogen Ayris, who is competing in her first Commonwealth Games, surprised everyone by winning the bronze medal in the women’s pole vault.
After Anicka missed to cross the bar at 4.45m, New Zealand has assured a medal, with McTaggart being the more likely candidate due to her personal best of 4.65m compared to Ayris’ 4.50m.
However, the 21-year-old won the bronze medal on a countback after both competitors failed to reach 4.50m, forcing McTaggart to fight for fourth after placing ninth on the Gold Coast.
In the women’s pole vault final, Imogen beat off fellow countrywoman and training partner Olivia McTaggart to take home New Zealand’s first athletics gold in Birmingham, Otago Daily Times reports.
