Australian animator Bruce Petty, who was well-known worldwide, died at the age of 93 following a protracted illness. Petty was raised in Doncaster on a tiny farm after being born in Melbourne.
He began his career as an orchardist before, at the age of 19, getting a job at the Owen brothers’ animation business in Box Hill. Petty’s first endeavor was authoring the screenplay for the animated safety awareness film Careful Koala, which kindled his interest in the field of animation.
The work of Polish illustrator Feliks Topolski was exposed to Petty while he was taking night lessons at RMIT, despite the fact that he was more interested in humor than drawing. This exposure had a big impact on his distinctive style.
Petty arrived in London in 1954 after working in the art section of the Herald newspaper in Melbourne. There, he designed plays and had his work featured in the satirical publication Punch.
He traveled from New York to Australia and sold his writing to several magazines, including The New Yorker and Esquire.
