Bruce Paige Career

Paige’s career at the station began in January 1971, when he moved to Channel Nine in 1985, when he first came to prominence on television reading the ABC bulletin. He left Nine for Network Ten in 1990 but had moved back to his home town of Townsville for three years, reading the local news. Paige returned as a weekend newsreader to Nine’s statewide news in 1994 and was back in the weekend position by 1995.

Paige also hosted the short-lived Queensland current affairs program of Channel Nine, Eye On Queensland during 1997, and was used in a series of documentaries on the network in a presentation role. There was an incident in 2003 when the weekend newsreader Mike London was alleged to have organized a female fan to complain about Bruce Paige’s newsreading technique. London was alleged to email the woman, believed to be his friend, to suggest that Paige “could do with a personality bypass,” suggesting London was doing a better job of presenting. Mike London resigned from Channel Nine when the story ‘ broke ‘ in the Brisbane Courier Mail newspaper.

Paige delivered a series of reports from the region after Cyclone Larry in north Queensland. These were described as quite personal at the time, as he grew up not far from the areas affected.

On June 17, 2009, Bruce announced his intention to step down as Nine’s Brisbane newsletter presenter at the end of Nine News. He says he’ll start exploring the world with his wife, but he says he’ll still do what he can to help Nine, adding a quote: “Don’t say goodbye but see you later.” On Friday, June 26, 2009, he presented his final bulletin. By that point, on the Brisbane market, Nine News had lost its ratings dominance.

Paige filled in on Nine News Queensland for Andrew Lofthouse and Melissa Downes during the summer of 2009 – 10, 2010 – 11 and 2011 – 12, presenting the newsletter solo.

Political bombshell: Grummitt bows out of Gold Coast Council with Bruce Paige set to run

HE’S known to hundreds of thousands of Queenslanders and, following a shock announcement, the door is open for this identity to try his hand at politics.

TELEVISION newsreader Bruce Paige is considering swapping the studio for the council chambers as one of the city’s longest-serving councillors bows out.

In the first political bombshell of the election campaign, Labrador councillor Margaret Grummitt has confirmed she will not contest the March 2016 election, opening the way for a free-for-all in the northern division.

Mr Paige, Channel Nine’s long-serving Gold Coast newsreader is known to have held talks with city leaders over a potential run at the division which Cr Grummitt will have held for 12 years from 2000 to present.

The departure of the long-serving councillor is expected to turn the division which borders the Broadwater, into one of the city’s most intense political battlegrounds.

Mr Paige is understood to be one of at least six people mulling a run at the division.

Despite her departure from council, the popular community advocate said she had no intention of retiring.

“I will not be standing at the next election and I want to explore other options,” Cr Grummitt said.

“I will not be retiring though, because I will be involved in the community and I want to be free to get the Labrador Ladies Lounge together which would be similar to our popular Men’s Shed hub.

“Anyone who wants to stand for council is open to do so and they can come and talk to me about it but residents will vote for someone who can do the job, not for someone who needs a job and I think we need a capable person in there.”

The Gold Coast Bulletin has been told Mr Paige has met Cr Grummitt and signalled his intention to contest the poll.

When contacted by the Gold Coast Bulletin yesterday, Mr Paige did not rule out a run.

“I certainly haven’t decided,” he said.

“It sounds like too much hard work for me.”

Cr Grummitt served as a police officer for more than 30 years, including stints as a police prosecutor in the domestic violence court.

She was first elected to the council in 2000 but did not contest the 2004 poll, instead making an unsuccessful push enter state politics in the seat of Broadwater for the National Party.

After serving another four years in the police, she retired and again contested Division 4 after it was vacated by then-mayoral candidate Rob Molhoek.

Cr Grummitt was re-elected in 2008 and again in 2012.

Cr Grummitt said she had been honoured to represent her community for so long and had many successes, including the closure of the Suntown Tip, fighting for the recreational use of the Broadwater and creating the foreshore walking path from Land’s End Bridge to Harley Park.

“My greatest success was closing the Suntown tip against all odds, building up the boardwalk along the foreshore where there used to be just sand dunes and having fought for the recreational use of the Broadwater,” she said.

“I can look back on 12 happy and challenging years and the work I have done with three mayors – Gary Baildon, Ron Clarke and Tom Tate.

“It has been an honour to serve the residents of the Gold Coast and for me this will not stop because I plan to keep working with charities.”
