Bruce Karsh Biography
Bruce Karsh is an American investor and former lawyer. He the president and co-Founder of Oaktree Capital Management, L.P., an institutional money management firm formed in 1995.
He also serves as a portfolio manager for Oaktree’s distressed debt funds and is actively involved in managing the firm. Prior to co-founding Oaktree, Mr. Karsh was a Managing Director of TCW and its affiliate, TCW Asset Management Company, and the portfolio manager of the Special Credits Funds for seven years.
Bruce Karsh Education
In 1974, he graduated from Ladue Horton Watkins High School in St. Louis. In 1977, Karsh earned an A.B. degree in economics from Duke University where he graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1980 he earned a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he received the academic award Order of the Coif. While at the University of Virginia he served as notes editor for the Virginia Law Review.

Karsh and his wife started the charitable Organization the Karsh Family Foundation which has donated or committed over 200 million for education and a scholarship across all levels. The recipients have been teaching for American and KIPP. He is the founder of the Painted Turtle and a non –profit organization that operates a camp children with life- Threatening diseases in Los Angeles. Karsh helped the fund a renovation project to create the Karsh Student services center at the University of Virginia Law.

Prior to that, he was an attorney with the law firm of O’Melveny and Myers. Before working at O’Melveny and Myers, Mr. Karsh served as an appellate clerk to the Honorable Anthony M. Kennedy, presently Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
Before working at O’Melveny and Myers, Mr. Karsh clerked for the Honorable Anthony M. Kennedy, then of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and retired Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Karsh holds an A.B. degree in economics summa cum laude from Duke University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
