Brooks is well-known for being a part of The Growlers. The Growlers is an American band from Southern California who began their career in the Orange County city of Dana Point, California in 2006. They are currently based in Costa Mesa. The band is currently composed of singer Brooks Nielsen and keyboard player/guitarist Kyle Straka
Brooks alongside Matt are the founders of the band. Brooks and music director/guitarist Matt Taylor met in high school in the beach town of Dana Point, California, bonding over surfing, skating, and partying. The duo was offered a chance to perform at a house party. They took in the chance and wrote their first six sings. This led to the first incarnation of the band that would eventually become The Growlers.
The duo released several self-recorded cassettes and CDs. They made their name The Growlers. They were issued their first studio album, Are You In or Out? in the year 2009 under Everloving Records. Their second album was Hot Tropics which they released in the year 2010 under Everloving Records. Their third album was Hung at Heart which featured Anthony Braun Perry on bass and Jason Kaiser on percussion. They released the song in the year 2013.
The band originally worked with Dan Auerbach to record the album, but the finished version never saw official release. Instead, the band recorded a new version of the album in Costa Mesa, CA with Mike McHugh at his Distillery Recording Studio, to get a more lo-fi sound. The band is still active and continues to release songs.

In the year 2020, Brooks issued an apology over sexual misconduct allegations aimed at the band. He was faced with several allegations which included claims against the frontman and The band’s guitarist Matt Taylor.

Behaviour that was insensitive, offensive or even improper. “I apologise for my actions and for any band members, that have hurt, offended or damaged any person or made anyone feel less than 100% safe.
