Bronny James was born on October 6, 2004, to LeBron James, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year at the time, and his then-girlfriend Savannah Brinson. Both of James’ parents raised him, and they married in 2013.
James participated in a variety of sports as a child, including basketball and soccer, but his father forbade him from participating in football or ice hockey due to safety concerns. By 2014, James was appearing in basketball highlight reels that attracted national attention. James led Old Trail School in Bath Township, Summit County, Ohio, where he attended middle school, to an Independent School League tournament victory in February 2018.

He helped the North Coast Blue Chips win the John Lucas All-Star Weekend in Houston in March 2018. His Blue Chips went undefeated and won the under-13 championship at the NY2LA Swish ‘N Dish tournament in Wisconsin on April 2, 2018. James played for the same team in the Jr. National Basketball Association (NBA) Midwest Championships against ninth-grade opponents in June, reaching the quarterfinals. Despite being 14 years old, he joined the AAU team Strive for Greatness at the under-16 Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) in Indianapolis in April 2019, where he faced a number of highly coveted recruits and drew praise from scouts.
