Brittany Higgin, who was a junior staff member, was only four weeks into her role at the time. Her story follows the story of other women who have spoken out about the inappropriate treatment they experienced working in the House of Parliament.

Statement

A statement from a member of the Prime Minister’s Office said the reports were “deeply distressing”.

“Throughout the entire process, the government’s main concern was supporting Ms. Higgins’s well-being in any way possible. At all times, guidance was sought from Ms. Higgins on how she wished to proceed and to support and respect her decisions. ”

Days after the alleged incident, a meeting between Senator Reynolds, Ms. Higgins, and a senior staff member was held inside the minister’s office, the scene of the alleged crime. The Prime Minister’s Office admitted that holding the meeting at this location was an “oversight”.

“Given the seriousness of the incident, the location of the meeting with Ms. Higgins should have been considered and in hindsight, he regrets that oversight.”

Sen. Reynolds, who is now Defense Minister, told the Senate that she was “extremely concerned” for Higgins’ well-being. “Women must be safe and they must feel safe in the workplace at all times,” she said.

“My only priority throughout this matter was the well-being of my then-staff member and ensuring that she received the support that she needed. That included making sure he was clear on the support available to her and hers on her right to file a formal complaint with the Australian Federal Police if she so wished. ”

She added that she “went out of her way to ensure that my staff member felt empowered to determine how she wanted to handle the matter, and that remains the case.”

Sen. Reynolds said she was unaware that the alleged incident occurred in the office when she arranged the meeting and said that she would have held it elsewhere if she had known.

Higgins did not make a Formal Complaint

ACT police confirmed that they had spoken with a whistleblower in April 2019, but the whistleblower decided not to file a formal report. “Victims always have a say in how far a police investigation goes, they can determine that an issue is not being processed and they can withdraw from the process at any time,” police said.

“It is not uncommon for an investigation to be stopped, not prosecuted, or restarted at a later time, at the request of a victim.”

Higgins said he chose not to file a formal complaint because of his desire at the time to protect the reputation of the Liberal Party and keep his “dream job.” He said he was given the option of working the May 2019 election campaign in Western Australia, Senator Reynolds’ home state, or returning to his home on the Gold Coast.

He said he was told that he would not have a job after the election if he went to the Gold Coast.
