Brian’s father Jo Jo White was an American professional basketball player. He was born on November 16, 1946.
Jo Jo was the seventh child in his family and was born to his parents. His love for basketball started at a very young age.
When he was six years old, he started playing basketball and used to support St. Louis Hawks in his childhood.
He played college basketball at the University of Kansas, which he joined in midseason. His team entered the NCAA tournament after immense success.
Though they lost the final, White was announced as his team leader in 1968. He later made it into The- Big Eight team for three straight years.
Later he graduated with a physical education degree from the Univerisity of Kansas.
After he completed college, he went to join the US men’s team for the Olympic championship. The US Basketball Committee selected the players from different tournaments and groups where White, alongside Haywood, was the leader for the game.
The US team led by White and Haywood went on to win the gold medal in the Olympic games beating Yugoslavia 65–50 in the title game.
After the Olympics, White was drafted by the Boston Celtics, who recently won their eleventh title. He played with Boston Celtics almost for 10 seasons and won the NBA Finals in 1974 and 1976.
In 1976, Jo Jo led Celtics to the NBA championship and was named the most valuable player of the 1976 NBA Finals. He was the game-high scorer with 33 points and had 9 assists.
Later Brian’s father went on to be the basketball’s first “iron men,” setting a record of 488 consecutive games played. In the 1977/78 season, White suffered an injury that led his team to a knockout blow from the playoffs and lost two seasons in a row.
Jo Jo retired as a player after 1981 and returned a year later as an assistant coach to Jayhawks. In 2012, he established Jo Jo Jo White Foundation to support brain cancer research.
