Brian Tierney Net Worth, Income, Salary, Earnings, Biography

Originally from Philadelphia, Brian P. Tierney (born 1957) is an American advertising and public relations professional who formerly served as editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper. Originating in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania, Tierney built one of the most successful public relations and advertising companies in Philadelphia, which he sold to a rival company in 1999 and then departed to pursue other opportunities. Tierney is now the chief executive officer of Brian Communications, which he established in 2010, as well as RealTime Media, which he purchased from its former owners with the assistance of venture capital company New Spring Capital.

Tierney was well-known for sometimes contacting reporters and their editors when he felt there was evidence of prejudice or unprofessionalism around a bad article about his clients during his early years as a public relations advocate for his clients. Following the acquisition of Tierney Communications by True North Communications in 1998, Tierney departed the company and went on to establish another public relations business, which was sold a few months after it was formed. When Tierney put together a group of investors in 2006, they formed Philadelphia Media Holdings LLC, with the goal of acquiring the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News. Tierney, the chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Philadelphia Media Holdings, was also appointed as publisher of the Philadelphia Inquirer soon after his company acquired the newspaper.

In the beginning, there were doubts about Tierney’s impartiality due of his previous involvement in Republican politics and conflicts he had had with certain journalists. The appointment of renowned writer and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner William K. Marimow as editor of The Inquirer, as well as Mr. Tierney’s signature of a promise not to meddle with the editorial substance of the two newspapers, allayed such concerns. Under Mr. Marimow’s leadership, The Inquirer’s editorial quality increased as the daily reverted to its origins by publishing more investigative articles, a trend that has continued. Initially, in 2007, circulation rose, and advertising revenues improved as a result.
