Brian Lehrer The Brian Lehrer Show

Since its beginnings in 1989, Lehrer has hosted his show, initially called On the Line. The format is newsmaker interviews, combined with phone calls from listeners. Newsmakers are local, national and global, often writers on book tours or politicians in the metropolitan area, including senators from New York and most officials from New York, New Jer, and New York City.

Sometimes visitors are less-known news-affected people, such as inhabitants of Brooklyn on the site of gigantic residential projects, or neighbors of noisy night clubs in Manhattan. Housing, health care, transportation, education, and other governmental functions are common subjects; the arts; living experience in New York and the surrounding region; and international affairs such as the Iraq war

The New York Times is often used by teacher programs for leads and visitors. He attempts to keep a balance between problems as they impact listeners, and political pundit “horse-race” conversations. The show won a 2007 Peabody Award “for enabling reasoned discussion and opening it to everyone in earshot.”
