Brian Alonzo Biography
Brian Alonzo is an American Journalist who joined KETK-TV/KFXK-TV in August of 2016 as a weekend meteorologist. A native Texan, Brian was born and raised in San Antonio. He attended two universities: The University of Oklahoma and the University of the Incarnate Word. Alonzo was the first student to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology at UIW. He also has a minor in Communication Arts.

While attending OU, he worked at KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City. Even though he was in the operations department, Brian helped out with the weather team whenever severe weather threatened. He learned what goes into severe weather coverage and storm chased with photojournalists and reporters.
In 2005, he returned home to San Antonio when UIW started a meteorology program. In 2006, he was hired at KSAT-TV as weather and traffic producer and held the position for 10 years.
Alonzo is a current member of the American Meteorological Society and is the former president of the South Central Texas Chapter of the American Meteorological Society/National Weather Association.

Texas is no stranger when it comes to heavy rain which leads to flash flooding. Last year in 2018 it was the second related killer with eighty people losing their lives across the country. Of those eighty, Texas was the number one state with twelve people losing their lives.
Why does flash flooding occur here in East Texas? We can see an active weather pattern like this past Winter and Spring where rounds of rain can keep the soil moisture high. So any additional rain can cause flooding issues. Severe weather can be another cause of flooding issues.
Storms can train over the same area which can drop a lot of rain in a short amount of time. This scenario occurred this past weekend near Jacksonville down toward Nacogdoches where almost seven inches of rain fell over the weekend. Another can be from tropical systems that can move inland like what we saw in parts of Deep East Texas from Hurricane Harvey a couple of years ago.
More people love their love by driving into flooded roadways. All it takes is about six inches of fast-moving water to knock over an adult and about twelve inches of rushing water to carry away most cars.
