Brett Brown is an elite American professional basketball coach, exploiting his skills with the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA. His journey from South Portland to the highest level of world basketball includes a stellar college career at Boston University, a long career coaching in Australia and as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs.
Brett Brown’s Bio
Sixers head coach Brett William Brown was born in South Portland, Maine on February 16, 1961, to Bob and Bonny Brown. He attended South Portland High School, where his father was the head coach.
During his high school career, he was named first-team all-state guard in 1978 and 1979 and also led his team to a 27–0 record as well as a state Class A title in his last year. After his high school career, Brown played four seasons at Boston University with the Boston Terriers, managed by Rick Pitino. There he continued his athletic sport, receiving several mentions and awards in turn. He was named Lou Cohen’s Most Valuable Player as a sophomore and captained the team in his junior and senior seasons.
Although he is a standout player, he did not envision a career on the court but rather behind the stage as a coach. He never turned professional but instead earned a graduate assistant coaching position under coach John Kuester before moving to Australia.
Career
To put his coaching career in motion, he was given a job offer as assistant coach of the Melbourne Tigers until 1993 when he became head coach of the North Melbourne Giants. A year later, he led the Giants to a championship win and was named NBL coach. After five explosive years with the Giants, he was introduced to the NBA as an unpaid intern with the San Antonio Spurs in 1998-99.
He moved to the Australian side again to coach the Sydney Kings from 2000 to 2002 and was also an important part of the Australian national team. Brown was the assistant coach from 1995 to 2003, including the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, as well as the 1998 World Championships and from 2009 to 2012, as the head coach in which he led the team at 2012 Olympics.
He joined Spurs as director of team player development and eventually as an assistant coach in 2007 under Gregg Popovich. He created a consistently strong bench by focusing his attention on the team’s lesser-known players and playing a major role in signing one of his Australian national team players, star Patty Mills. Brett Brown also won four championship rings with Spurs.
Having served under storied coaches such as Rick Pitino, Lindsay Gaze, Gregg Popovich and, of course, his father, he was poised to blaze a trail as the 24th coach of the Philadelphia 76ers. In August 2013, he became the head coach of the Sixers who offered him a guaranteed 4-year contract. He inherited a team in ‘total rebuild mode’ but would later be praised for his optimistic persistence during an unprecedented rebuilding programme.
In the second half of the 2013–14 season, the Sixers tied the record for the longest losing streak in the NBA after losing 26 straight games. Despite this, Brown is committed to training his players with his collaborative skills, work ethic, own analysis and essential sense of humor. One of them, Michael Carter-Williams, won NBA Rookie of the Season.
The 76ers signed Brett Brown to a contract extension in December 2015 and another in May 2018. He was also named the team’s interim president of basketball operations on June 7, 2018.
family, wife
The Sixers head coach is a real asset in the old block. Not only did he come from a sportingly inclined family, but he also replicated and even doubled the successes of his background.
His father, Bob Brown, coached for 52 years – mostly in high schools, but also in colleges, including Boston University, Saint Anselm College and the University of Southern Maine before his retirement in 2012. Bob is also a member of five Halls of Fame. Both father and son represent a line of coaches unmatched in Maine annals and are both inductees into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.
Brett Brown met and married his wife Anna (born September 1967) in Melbourne, Australia. The duo have been married for over two decades and have two daughters, Julia and Laura, and a son, Sam. They reside in Voorhees, New Jersey.
Height, weight, measurements
The veteran trainer is a sight to behold in his athletic fit body physique. He is 5 feet 11 inches tall. His weight and measurements, even if we don’t know them, would be nothing more than a correspondence.
