Bradley Tusk Book, The Fixer

The Fixer: My Adventures Saving Startups from Death by Politics was originally published on 18th September 2018 by author Bradley Tusk. The famed political advisor to Uber, FanDuel, Lemonade, Tesla and other startups reveals what really happens at the intersection of politics, tech, and business.

Most new startups today are in highly regulated industries with strong incumbents – transportation, hotels, drones, energy, gaming, education, health care, cannabis, finance, liquor, insurance. The more startups try to snatch a piece of the establishment’s pie, the more they risk running into a political wall. That’s where Bradley Tusk comes in.

Bradley Tusk Book Reviews

“Lively and entertaining.” —The New York Times

“Bradley Tusk is raw, smart, and focused. The Fixer will become the book you didn’t know your business depends on—dragging you through the mud and into the trenches of startups and politics.” —SCOTT GALLOWAY, professor of marketing at NYU Stern School of Business and author of The Four

“This roller-coaster ride of a personal business memoir ends with a series of case studies of what smart political pressure can really do (and often not do … not every story ends happily). The Fixer is the curtain (finally) being drawn on the often ugly inside the reality of what happens when startups attempt to upend a comfortable (and profitable) regulatory order. Any startup founder attempting to eat some incumbent’s lunch (and that’s most of them) would be advised to read the lessons in The Fixer.” —ANTONIO GARCÍA-MARTÍNEZ, author of Chaos Monkeys

“Disrupting any major industry means disrupting its politics, too. Bradley’s story about fighting for startups from Uber to Tesla, from delivering cannabis to marketing vitamins on Instagram, from mobile voting to fantasy sports, captures exactly what it’s like trying to navigate your startup through the muddy world of politics. This is a truly great story.” —MATT KING, CEO of FanDuel

“A must-read for anyone in tech—or worried about being disrupted by tech!”—DANIEL SCHREIBER, CEO of Lemonade

“A deeply funny, exhilarating tour of the dark political arts … Reading The Fixer is like being shot out of a cannon and landing on a bullet train that’s flying off the edge of a cliff. One thing is abundantly clear: You want Bradley Tusk working for you, not against you!”—STEVEN SODERBERGH, filmmaker.

He received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California. He made millions on stock options he acquired as a marketing manager for Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel, and retired at 32. Apple Investment: In 1976, Jobs along with two of his friends, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne founded Apple. Wayne was bought out two weeks later. Venture Capitalist. In 1977, Mike was introduced to Jobs by Venture Capitalist Don Valentine who had passed on investing in Apple. Jobs convinced Markkula that the Apple II had enormous commercial potential and convinced him to become their first major angel investor. Mike would invest a total of $250,000 in Apple – $80,000 was an equity investment and $170,000 was a loan. With the investment Mike became one-third owner of Apple and officially employee #3. In the beginning, Mike considered Apple a temporary side project. He went so far as to promise his wife that he would spend no more than four years at the start-up. He ended up working at the company for nearly two decades. Notable Apple Accomplishments: Mike soon discovered within himself a remarkable aptitude for the details needed to build a high technology company. Mike wrote several early Apple II programs and served as a beta tester for Apple hardware and software. He also was acutely aware that neither Jobs nor Wozniak had the skills or polish to be a public company CEO. In 1977 he hired Michael Scott to serve as Apple’s CEO. He served as CEO until 1981 following Apple’s successful IPO. During his peak years with the company Mike helped Apple access critical credit and venture capital. He hired the company’s first CEO, Michael Scott, before taking the title himself between 1981 and 1983. He green-lit designs that would eventually become the Macintosh computer and prevented Steve Jobs from killing the project in favor of the “Lisa”. The Mac became an enormous success. The Lisa was a huge failure. Mike himself then took over as CEO until 1983 when the company, primarily Jobs, recruited Pepsi’s CEO John Sculley to take over. Under Sculley’s management, the company’s revenue increased from $800 million to $8 billion. In 1993 Mike sided Sculley over Steve Jobs in a major management dispute that rocked the company to its core. Jobs felt so angry and betrayed by Mike in particular that he quit Apple and sold off his entire 20% stake for less than $100 million. Years later that 20% stake would have been worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Years later Steve Wozniak would actually credit Markkula for the success of Apple, more than himself or even Jobs. Other Accomplishments: Mike retired officially from Apple upon Jobs’s return in 1997. He invested in a number of additional companies, including notably Crowd Technologies and LiveCode, Ltd. In 1982 Mike and his wife Linda paid $8 million for a sprawling 14,000 square-foot ranch called Rana Creek Ranch in Carmel Valley, California. That’s the same as spending around $20 million in today’s dollars. The property has a 5,400 square-foot main house and several guest houses. It features a working cattle ranch, private lake, riding arena, helipad and 3,000-foot landing strip. They listed the home for sale in 2013 for $60 million. They lowered the price to $45 million in 2016 and then $37 million in 2020. Mike and Linda have used their wealth to make a number of philanthropic donations. Over the years they have given millions of dollars to Santa Clara University which is now home to the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.

That being said, Riggs would voice his iconic character once again in a special episode of “Robot Chicken” later that year. The seventh and eighth seasons received mixed reviews, unlike the other seasons of the series – which were widely praised by critics. In 2019, he appeared in the science fiction film “Only.” That year, he also returned to television work with a recurring role in “A Million Little Things” as Patrick Nelson.Real Estate: In 2019, it was revealed that Riggs had purchased a duplex in Hollywood Hills. Situated in a quiet part of town, the duplex cost Chandler about $1.7 million. Although the residence features two separate, self-contained residences, they can be combined for use as a main house and an attached guesthouse. The smaller unit features two bedrooms, while the larger upper until features three bedrooms, hardwood floors, a fireplace, and stunning views of the surrounding canyons.Almost immediately after he had purchased the home, it was widely reported that Riggs had been seemingly ridiculed by the official Twitter account of “The Walking Dead.” After Chandler wrote “I just bought a house lol what,” the Twitter handle of “The Walking Dead” replied by saying “I doubt you’ll stay in it though.” Although many people assumed that this was an overt insult, true fans of the series recognized it as a reference to a moment from season 2. In the story, Rick Grimes orders Carl (Chandler’s character) to stay in the house, but he disobeys his father and gets into all kinds of trouble. In 2020, it was reported that Riggs was seeking a tenant for the lower guesthouse in his duplex. The 700-square-foot property was apparently available for rent, with the price of $3,700 per month.
