He earned the nickname Boz from a classmate at St. Mark’s School of Texas in Dallas. Scaggs began playing guitar when he was 12 years old and he played in several bands while attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He moved to London after leaving school where he bounced from band to band. He is probably most famous for his work with Steve Miller in the 1970s. Boz released his first solo album in 1965. He returned to the U.S., appearing on records with the Steve Miller Band, before signing with Atlantic Records to release his second album. Scaggs’ success came when he switched labels; his next five albums would all hit the charts. His 1976 effort “Silk Degrees” climbed to number two on the Billboard 200 in the U.S. After his subsequent albums didn’t sell as well, Scaggs took a hiatus and didn’t return until 1988 with “Other Roads”. Between 1965 and 2013, Scaggs released 21 solo albums. He and his wife, Dominique Scaggs, live in Napa County, California, where they make their own wine. They have several children together, including journalist son, Austin, and son, Oscar, who overdosed on heroin in 1998.
