His father owned and ran the Black Scorpio sound system and he began his musical career as a sound system deejay in his early teens.

His stage name Bounty killer came about when he was in hospital as a result of being shot by a stray bullet during a gunfight between rival political factions when he was 14 years old. Price increased his performances on a greater number of sound systems and turned his attention towards recording after he recovered from the gunshot wound.

Bounty Killer 1990s.

Before his entry into the dancehall industry, Price was in the local manufacturers as a businessperson selling figurines. He was then inspired to record at King Jammy’s studio in Kingston. Bounty ultimately recorded with King Jammy, the first session being in Spring 1992. One of his first tunes was the “Copper shot”, which Jammy was reluctant to release due to its lyrics praising gun culture. Jammy’s brother Uncle T disagreed and released the single himself.

The deejay performed at Sting, the greatest one night show, held in Portmore, Jamaica every year on Boxing Day, whereas he had a high-profile collision with fellow deejay Beenie Man in 1993. The cold war between them continued through the 1990s, with both blaming each other of a stolen act. They resolved their differences after both recognized the negative effect their feud was having on the industry. He has also had heated disputes with various other top deejays, including Merciless and Vybz Kartel, throughout his career.

Bounty left Jammy in 1995 and set up his own Scare Dem Productions company and Priceless Records label and increased control over his output. Throughout the 1990s, he voiced for various producers and labels in Jamaica, releasing songs such as “Book, Book, Book”, “Defend the Poor”, “Mama”,  “Babylon System”, “Look Good”  and “Down in the Ghetto”. At about this time, he became known in the USA and in Europe, recording with such artists as Capone-N-Noreaga, Busta Rhymes, The Fugees,  No Doubt, Wyclef Jean, Masta Killa, Mobb Deep, Swizz Beatz, and AZ.

He released four albums in 1994 with others following during the mid-1990s. His 1996 album My Xperience was largely successful, staying six months on the Billboard reggae chart. Bounty’s cover version of Rose Royce hit single “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” with Swedish singer Robyn in 1997, was a success in the Caribbean.

It was featured in She’s So Lovely (Sean Penn film). In 1998, he shared the song “Deadly Zone” to the album Blade: Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture. Basil has expressed derision for popular rap, which he called “embarrassing to reggae,” even when collaborating with Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep and others he regards hardcore.

Bounty Killer 2000s.

Price collaborated with No Doubt on their single “Hey Baby” in 2001. Additional success accompanied by albums such as Ghetto Dictionary Volume I: Art of War and Ghetto Dictionary Volume II: Mystery, the latter gaining a Grammy nomination, which he lost to Reggae producer Lee Scratch Perry.

Killer later admitted that he felt he should have won the award, as Lee Scratch should have won that section during his glory days. In 2006, he signed with VP Records and released the compilation album Nah No Mercy – The Warlord Scrolls on November 7th, 2006. The Hip Hopera singer has been attributed to having motivated many young artists such as Elephant Man, Vybz Kartel, Mavado, and numerous other members of The Alliance.

Bounty Killer won his first Grammy Award in 2002, for the song Hey Baby, a collaboration with No Doubt, for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a duo or group. The victory made Bounty one of the few hardcore Dancehall musicians to win a Grammy Award. The song also sold over a million copies making it Bounty Killer’s first single to go platinum. The reggae artist was also voted ‘Guinness greatest Dancehall icon’ in 2012 and later won deejay of the year, in The STAR People’s Choice Award presented by The Jamaica Gleaner in 2013.

Price canceled two of his concerts after the LGBT magazine Outrage! petitioned Scotland Yard for his arrest, in 2003, alleging songs about bashing gays would provoke harassment against the gay community. He returned in 2006 after a three-year break, performing uncensored lyrics at various venues without recrimination. He has since directed his focus to social criticism and party lyrics, indicating that he will not pay attention to nor attack the gay community in his music.

In 2008, Bounty Killer collaborated with Daddy Yankee in the song “Controlando El Area” for the album “Caribbean Connection”. Bounty Killer and long-term rival Beenie Man put aside their differences and recorded a single together, “Legendary” in 2014.
