Bobby Johnston (born 1967 in Olean, New York) is a multi-instrumentalist and film composer. The Barrens, Wristcutters: A Love Story, Edmond, Mother’s Day, and No Impact Man: The Documentary are among the films for which he created unique soundtracks. Stuart Gordon, the director, is someone he often collaborates with. Johnston is renowned for his unconventional approach to film composing, in which he uses solely acoustic instruments and performs every instrument himself. He’ll bring in an instrumental soloist on occasion. His most well-known works are Edmond, which included Ozomatli trumpet player Asdru Sierra, and Crazy Eyes, which featured Big Sir singer Lisa Papineau. On the soundtracks for A New York Heartbeat, Mother’s Day, and The Barrens, he collaborated with drummer Greg Ellis. Wristcutters: A Love Story made its global debut at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, and Johnston was a performer at the Sundance Music Café. I’m Leaving You, a tune by Johnston, was included in the soundtrack of the 2013 film The Lone Ranger. His music has been included on two of the show’s best hits CDs and has been heard often on the popular radio programme This American Life.
