Veteran radio personality Bob Mabena has died at the age of 51, his employers Power FM confirmed today. Mabena was a renowned television and radio host. Power FM in a statement said Mabena succumbed to a heart condition.
“It is with deep grief and pain that we announce that POWER 98.7 Breakfast Host, Mr Bob Mabena passed away this afternoon, Monday 10 August 2020, from cardiac arrest. The family is coming to terms with his passing and respectfully requests the public to afford them the appropriate space. Further details will be communicated in due course,” reads the release.
Mabena started his Radio career in 1989 at Radio Bop. After spending three years at Radio Bop, he was recruited by the founding Station Manager of Radio Metro, Koos Radebe.
For over thirty years of his career, he has worked for Highveld Stereo, Kaya FM, Power FM and other notable media houses.
Mabena’s death comes just two months after he told his Twitter followers that his beloved grandmother had succumbed to COVID-19.
In that tweet, Mabena wrote: “So sad for your loss Ntando. Your experience is almost the same with my grandmother this past week. She contracted Covid in a hospital whilst going in for a lung infection. Within 3 days, she was gone. The hospitals aren’t ready.”

The most recent death in the Mabena family comes after the radio DJ lost his grandmother to Corona Virus Disease as she made her way to the hospital to seek medical attention for a lung infection in June.

Bob began his radio career in 1989 in the Republic of Bophuthatswana with the now-defunct Radio Bop where he presented the Afternoon and Breakfast shows. He also presented a Music Video show on Bop TV. After spending three years in the North West and having ventured into television as well; he was recruited by Koos Radebe – Radio Metro station manager – to the national radio station.
Bob’s stint at Radio Metro brought with it more national exposure in the form of a variety of TV shows, including “Pick a Tune” and “Studio Mix”, to mention a few. While at Radio Metro, Bob raced professionally in the Group N series for Nissan South Africa.
In 1996, Mabena moved to 94.7 as a mid-morning presenter and soon thereafter he went into management. His first experience with Kaya FM came in 1999 when he joined as the breakfast show host and Programme Manager and later Station Manager. Mabena left On Air presenting for a Primedia Business Development Manager post at Group level for two and a half years and this move would prove to be his foray into the business world.
Bob’s next move into the executive world was with the SABC as Executive Manager of Commercial Radio stations; Metro FM, 5FM and GoodHope FM for two years. Soon after that, he was recruited by MRC Radio as a director in charge of their radio stations, Gagasi FM and Heart FM. The live radio bug bit again and Mabena rejoined Kaya FM as Breakfast Host and established his own radio consultancy – EndowMedia. In May 2017, Mabena was recruited by MSG Group to head programming for all their radio stations. Added to his new responsibilities is his other role as station manager of Power98.7.
