William Marshall Thomson was a goalkeeper from Scotland. Thomson made his professional debut with Partick Thistle. The youngster was well-regarded and was given first-team experience in League Cup and Glasgow Cup games. In addition, he earned his first two Scotland under-21 caps.
A bid of £50,000 was made for him in August 1978, which was considered unusual for a 20-year-old reserve at a relatively unfashionable club at the time. Thistle agreed to the offer. Thomson appeared in the league only once as Alan Rough’s backup.
On May 16, 1980, in Belfast, Thomson made his full debut for Scotland against Northern Ireland. Due to a goal by Billy Hamilton, Scotland lost 1-0. During this time, Thomson was typically Alan Rough’s backup goalie. Thomson’s ensuing two appearances both came against Northern Ireland (the middle of the three was a 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifier and not the Home Internationals). In the 70th minute, Hamilton gave the Irish the lead. At 1-1, John Wark scored an equalizer.
