Tidy moved to Liverpool and worked as a layout artist at the Pagan Smith advertising agency. He started selling his cartoons to national newspapers and publications, especially Punch when he turned professional in 1957.
In 1960, he wed Rosa, a young Italian woman he had met while traveling. Other cartoonists like Eric Burgin and Ronald Searle’s early work impacted Tidy’s approach. He drew hands in the Disney manner, giving his characters just the thumb and the first three fingers.
The Cloggies, a comic by Tidy that satirized northern and urban British male culture, especially the brutal Lancashire clog-dancing scene, ran in Private Eye from 1967 to 1981.
Between 1971 to 1985, The Fosdyke Saga, a parody of Galsworthy’s epic narrative of an aristocratic family, appeared in the Daily Mirror. Tidy died, leaving his incredible cartoon creations as a legacy.
