On March 11, 2023, William Edward Tidy, MBE, a well-known British cartoonist, author, and television personality, passed away. His comic cartoons, which frequently emphasized his working-class beginnings in Northern England, helped him become famous.
The Cloggies and The Fosdyke Saga, which ran from 1967 to 1981 and 1971 to 1984, respectively, were Tidy’s most well-known comic strips.
When Tidy was granted MBE for his “Services to Journalism” in 2000, his talent and labor of love were recognized. He was renowned for his humanitarian activities and long-term support of the Lord’s Taverners group.
The Daily Sketch, Daily Mirror, New Scientist, What’s Brewing, and Punch, among others, have all included Tidy’s writing. Tidy attempted to purchase the book after Punch stopped to be published.
Tidy’s work as a cartoonist was successful, but he also frequently appeared on radio and television programs like Countdown, Watercolour Challenge, Through the Keyhole, Blankety Blank, Countryfile, and I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue. He created and hosted the children’s television program Draw Me, and in 1975, he was the topic of This Is Your Life.
His books, cartoons, and other creations—many of which are still on sale on his website—continue to carry on Tidy’s legacy.
