Bill Sienkiewicz Biography
The Pennsylvania born artist, Bill Sienkiewicz is best known for his comic books particularly the Marvel Comics’ The New Mutants, Moon Knight, and Elektra: Assassin, and Kingpin. He is noted as a revolutionary figure as his work in the ’80s was a great determining factor in today’s US comics. This is mostly because of his highly stylized art that verged on abstraction and made use of oil painting, photorealism, collage, mimeograph, and other forms that were unheard of in comic books.
Career
Bill was born on the 3rd of May 1958 in Blakely in Lackawanna County in the US state of Pennsylvania. At age 5, he moved with his family to Hainesville, New Jersey where he took his elementary and high school studies. He started drawing at age 4 or 5 and continued for the rest of his childhood. His major comic inspirations were Curt Swan and his Superman comics and Jack Kirby and his Fantastic Four comics.
Sienkiewicz studied at the Newark School of Fine Industrial Arts. After graduating, he showed a portfolio of his work to DC Comics’ art director Vince Colletta. This led him to join the comics field when he was just 19. At first, they didn’t have any work for him and he was considering joining the advertising or illustration fields instead. He was, however, referred to the Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Jim Shooter. Jim then hired him soon after.
Marvel and DC comics
Soon after joining Marvel, he drew Moon Knight, in ‘The Hulk’. Over the next couple of years, he continued his work as the artist for Moon Night. With his art style, he helped people see Moon Knight as a Batman clone. 4 years later, he started working as the artist on Marvel’s X-Men spin-off New Mutants starting with the #18 issue. In these times, his art style evolved into a much more expressionistic style. He also started experimenting with paint, collage, and mixed media.

William Felix Robert Sienkiewicz Quotes
So there’s kind of a simultaneous aspect to pushing the boundaries, and being very safe.
You’re telling the story, creating the sets, doing the lighting, the designing, and establishing the pace.
People who can pull you in and take you on a journey, as opposed to simply adding flash. Again, that feels very clinical, and I don’t respond to that the way I used to.
One of the problems I have with a lot of movies these days is that everything is too well lit. In the world of digital creations, there is a tendency to show too much.
It’s interesting, because in the corporate stuff there’s a dichotomy there, depending on the creator. Even what, in essence, may be a very safe corporate approach, there is some stuff that is allowed to be pushed.
