O’Brien was born to John O’Brien and Anne Murphy O’Brien in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on October 23, 1969.
Following his time with the Texans, which also included a contentious wide receiver trade of star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals and a 51-31 Divisional Round loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs team after leading 24-0 in the first quarter, O’Brien was fired by the Texans.
He was then hired by Alabama to serve as offensive coordinator from 2021 to 2023, after which he was re-hired by the Patriots to serve as the offensive coordinator.
