The late Bill Hicks (December 16, 1961 – February 26, 1994) was an American stand-up comedian, social commentator, satirist, and musician who worked in the entertainment industry. His work, which covered a broad variety of societal problems, including religion, politics, and philosophy, was controversial, and it was often laced with dark humour to convey its message. 

His criticisms of the media and popular culture were directed at materialism, superficiality, mediocrity, and dullness, which he described as repressive instruments of the ruling class that “keep people dumb and indifferent.” In Houston, Texas, he started performing at the Comedy Workshop when he was 16 years old, while still a student in high school. During the 1980s, he toured widely across the United States and appeared on a number of high-profile television shows; but, it was in the United Kingdom that he developed a substantial fan following, which he demonstrated by filling big venues during his 1991 tour. 

He also gained some notoriety as a guitarist and songwriter, albeit only to a limited extent. Hicks died of pancreatic cancer on February 26, 1994, in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the age of 32. He had been diagnosed with the disease in 1992. Following his death, his corpus of work received widespread critical praise in the creative community, and he became into something of a celebrity in his own right. The fourth best stand-up comedian in the United Kingdom according to Channel 4’s list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Ups in the United Kingdom in 2007, and he retained that position on the 2010 list.
