Geist began his career as a photographer with the First Infantry Division in Vietnam in 1969. In 1972 he joined Chicago Tribune as a reporter and columnist until 1980. Geist 1980 he joined The New York Times as a columnist, “About New York” column which appeared twice a week until 1987. In 1987 he joined CBS News Sunday Morning as a correspondent. While at CBS he was a host for several top shows such as the CBS Evening News, 60 minutes II, and CBS Sports. He received two Emmy Awards for his work on Sunday Morning.
One in 1992 for his report on the 66th anniversary of America’s famed Route 66 and in 2005 for his profile of Fred Carl, who started the Viking Range company in Greenwood, Miss., and completely revitalized this small, impoverished town. “I didn’t want to be the subject of pity, I didn’t want to think about it,” Geist explained the struggle he faces with the disease as he can no longer read his own handwriting, he rarely eats without spilling something, his mobility is altered and he has insomnia. “It now takes me several tries to send an email, especially from the back of a cab in New York City,” he said. “They aim for potholes.”
