2. This is how they started
For the above and beyond trio it was a very interesting beginning. First, Jono Grant met Paavo Siljamaki at Westminster University in 1999 when they were both students there. It was also here that the two realized they both had interests in electronic music and agreed to help each other write songs.
In pursuing this decision, Grant and Siljamak created Anjunabeats, a label with which they would release their songs; They also adopted the nickname as their professional name. The duo soon produced a single titled “Volume One” which they released under the Anjunabeats label. Considering they used the same as their record company and job name, they released songs with other names like Dirt Devils, Free State and so on.
Grant and Siljamak’s music began to make a breakthrough after they presented a CD copy of “Volume One” to DJ Paul Oakenfold. With DJ Oakenfold’s influence, the song immediately became popular in dance clubs and nightclubs, as well as among other popular DJs. The success of “Volume One” as well as several other songs and remixes by Grant and Siljamak soon caught the attention of Tony McGuinness, executive director of Warner Music Group. McGuinness then called the duo together to help him remix a song by Chakra titled “Home” and that’s where McGuinness came in.
After producing the remix, they titled it “Aboveand Beyond,” a slogan Grant got from the poster of an American motivational speaker who happens to be named Jono Grant. Chackra’s “Home” remix sold very well and was favored and rated above average by already well-known producers such as Rob Searle, Tilt etc. After being broadcast on BBC Radio 1, it peaked at number one in the UK Club Charts.
The Above and Beyond Trio continued to thrive, producing critically acclaimed remixes of songs by singers such as Aurora’s “Ordinary World”, Fragma’s “Everytime You Need Me”, Perpetuous Dreamer’s “The Sound of Goodbye”, Adamski’s “In the City” and Madonna’s ” What It Feels Like for a Girl” “, among others. All of this helped create a solid platform for the group and propelled them into the limelight in the electronic music field.
In 2002, Above and Beyond made their first professional DJ gig in Tokyo along with DJs Ferry Corsten and Tiësto. This debut, which was witnessed live by 8,000 club members, became the trio’s breakthrough. Their fan base gradually grew and they performed at major world music concerts and festivals.
