Beyonce received many tributes on her birthday, including one from her husband Jay Z, who used part of his set during Sunday’s Made in America music festival to sing a birthday song to his wife.

Beyonce was born on September 4, 1981 in Houston, Texas to Tina Knowles (née Beyincé) and Mathew Knowles. Her father is African American while her mother is of Louisiana Creole descent.
She attended St. Mary’s Montessori School in Houston while enrolled in dance classes at school. Her singing talent was discovered by her teacher Darlette Johnson.

Her interest in music continued after beating 15/16 year olds who win a talent show at school at the age of seven. In 1990, Beyoncé enrolled in Parker Elementary School, a music magnet school in Houston, where she performed with the school’s choir.
