Beverley Knight MBE (born Beverley Anne Smith on March 22, 1973) is a British singer, songwriter, record producer, radio presenter, and musical theatre actress who debuted with her debut album, The B-Funk, in 1995. She has won numerous awards for her work, including the Queen’s Award for Achievement in the Arts. Knight has recorded seven studio albums to date, all of which have been heavily inspired by soul legends such as Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin. Knight is widely regarded as one of the finest soul singers to have emerged from the United Kingdom. She is best known for her hit songs “Greatest Day,” “Get Up!”, “Shoulda Woulda Coulda,” and “Come as You Are.” When she starred in the BBC One music television programme “Just the Two of Us” in 2006, Knight cemented her place in the mainstream by becoming a household name. She repeated her part in 2007. The following year, Knight collaborated with Take That to tour the United Kingdom in support of their platinum-selling compilation album. Her BBC Radio 2 programme Beverley’s Gospel Nights, which examine the history and effects of gospel music, has been broadcast for four seasons. To far, the programme has been on the air for four seasons and has included interviews with celebrities such as Destiny’s Child and Shirley Caesar, among others. Knight serves as an ambassador for a number of charitable organisations, including Christian Aid, and has travelled to regions afflicted by illness and poverty in order to raise awareness about these issues. As an ardent advocate for anti-AIDS organisations such as the Stop AIDS Campaign and the Terrence Higgins Trust, she is also a strong opponent of homophobic lyrics in urban music, which she has spoken out against in the past. On Saturday, August 15, 2009, she performed live in Regent’s Park as part of the fourth annual UK Black Pride celebration. Knight performed the songs “Shoulda Woulda Coulda” and “Gold” to an invited audience at 10 Downing Street on Friday, December 4, 2009, at the invitation of Sarah Brown, the Prime Minister’s wife. The performance was in support of the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood Million Mums charity and was hosted by Sarah Brown. Knight was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II in February 2007 in honour of her charity efforts and the impact she has made to British music over her more than a decade in the business. As a result of his achievements, Knight was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of Wolverhampton in September 2005. After earning a slew of honours, including three MOBO Awards, Knight was awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Urban Music Awards in London in 2004 for his contributions to the music industry. Knight was ranked number 58 in a survey of the 100 Greatest Black Britons conducted in 2007. 

At the O2 Arena, Knight provided support for Prince throughout his residency, and he ended up performing at his after-party. As a consequence, she was flown to Los Angeles to sing at his Oscars celebration in front of A-list celebrities, where she received a standing ovation from celebrities such as Quincy Jones. Knight performed during the Paralympic Opening Ceremony in London in 2012.
