The mother of Ellen, Betty DeGeneres (Full name: Elizabeth Jane DeGeneres) is an American LGBT rights activist and former speech therapist. She is an active member of Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
And also the first straight spokeswoman for the Human Rights Campaign’s National Coming Out Project. In 1997 when her daughter Ellen’s was highly publicized is when she became famous.
DeGeneres is the author of two books: Love, Ellen: A Mother-Daughter Journey and Just a Mom. In her book tilted,”In Love” she discusses her daughter act of coming out as a lesbian and also her path from passive acceptance to becoming a passionate advocate for LGBT.
In the book, DeGeneres, also describes the media scrutiny she received after Ellen came out. She continues the themes in her second book”Just a Mom. Also, she wrote “Ask Betty” a column for the (now defunct) website Planet Out.
In “The Puppy Episode” of the television sitcom Ellen, in which her daughter Ellen’s character comes out she appeared as an extra. DeGeneres appears in many episodes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, sitting in the audience. She is a breast cancer survivor and discusses this during public appearances. In 2005, Ellen spoke publicly for the first time about the molestation she had suffered from her stepfather when she was a teenager.
