Lenz is the only child of her parents, RobertGeorge Lenz and Catharine Malcolm Holt Shepard. While his father, Robert worked as a history teacher and therapist, his mother was a people manager and an entrepreneur.
Outside of her career, Bethany Joy Lenz is fascinated by photography and writing, just as she is passionate about knitting, stationery making and painting.

It was in November 2005 that Joy Lenz announced her engagement to former Enation band member Michael Galeotti.
Lenz finally married Galeotti on December 31, 2005.
Everyone thought everything was fine for Lenz and Galeotti until she revealed in March 2012 that they had broken down and agreed to end the marriage.
