The reason was Diamond could change his nature unexpectedly at any time and was scared that in a fit of rage he would use his knife and do something horrible.
One time, Beth told that Dustin even threatened to push her off the balcony. At the next moment, he would behave like nothing has happened and would again return to a good mood.
