The low-budget monster movie mastermind Bert I. Gordon passed away at the age of 100. Forrest J. Ackerman, the editor of Famous Monsters of Filmland, gave him the moniker “Mr. B.I.G.,” which not only referred to his initials but also to his preferred subject matter.
His death was verified by his daughter Patricia Gordon to the New York Times.
Gordon was a multi-talented filmmaker who handled all aspects of filmmaking, including producing, directing, writing, and special effects.
Yet with their extremely cheap budgets and hurried production times, Gordon’s films frequently had cameos from famous actors. A few examples include Peter Graves, Lon Chaney, Basil Rathbone, Ida Lupino, Orson Welles, Don Amiche, and Zsa Zsa Gabor.
The monsters, however, were the real stars of Gordon’s movies. For his roughly twenty films, he built a wide range of enormous monsters, such as cyclops, dinosaurs, enormous mealworms, gigantic rodents, enormous spiders and grasshoppers, dragons, and even enormous teenagers, who may have been his most terrifying creation.
