Berkeley Breathed Career
Breathed got his first job as a part-time employee at Austin American-Statesman. At the time, his work mainly involved drawing editorial cartoons for the paper. Sadly, his initial cartoons with the paper caused a huge scandal, and he was quickly relieved of his duties at the newspaper. He went ahead and published his debut comic strip dubbed The Academia Waltz.
This work was regularly published, and at some point, it was featured on the Daily Texan. Around this period, he was still pursuing his higher education at the University of Texas. He released two collections of his cartoon strip which helped a lot in paying for his tuition. The profits that he gained from the sales were quickly converted to pay for his tuition.
Bloom County made its debut on te 8th of December 1980. It included various characters from Academia Waltz, including former frat-boy Steve Dallas and the paraplegic Vietnam war veteran Cutter John. At its start, the strip’s style was so similar to that of another popular strip, Doonesbury, that Doonesbury’s creator Garry Trudeau wrote to Breathed several times to indicate their similarities. Breathed has acknowledged that he borrowed liberally from Doonesbury during his early career.
In the Outland collection, One Last Little Peek, Breathed even put an early Bloom County side-by-side with the Doonesbury comic strip from which it obviously took its idea. Come 1987, Berkeley’s Bloom County earned him the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning.
In the year 1989, He replaced the strip with the surreal Sunday-only cartoon Outland, which reused some of the Bloom County characters, including Opus the Penguin and Bill the Cat. He ended Outland in 1995. In 2003 he began the comic strip “Opus” a Sunday-only strip featuring Opus the Penguin, who was one of the main characters of Bloom County.
He announced plans to stop all work on comic strips On October 6, 2008 with the final Opus strip to run on November 2, 2008. Breathed planned to focus on writing children’s books. He emphasised that he felt that the United States was going to face “tough times”, and that he wanted to end the saga of his most memorable character “on a lighter note”.
Berkeley hinted at a return to the strip when he posted a photo to Facebook of him at his computer, starting a cartoon entitled “Bloom County 2015” on July 2015.. He added: “A return after 25 years. Feels like going home.” The strip was later posted to Facebook. He has subsequently been posting new Bloom County strips via Facebook on an almost-daily basis, as of January 2018.
