Benedetto Capizzi Obituary

Benedetto Capizzi, born on June 28, 1944, and departed from this world on September 12, 2023, leaves behind a legacy marked by infamy and intrigue as an Italian mobster and a prominent figure within the Sicilian Mafia. This obituary serves as a somber reflection on the life of a man whose name was synonymous with the clandestine world of organized crime.

Hailing from the Villagrazia area in Palermo, Capizzi rose through the ranks of the Sicilian Mafia to be nominated as the prospective head of the new Sicilian Mafia Commission. However, his notoriety became indelibly associated with the fateful day of December 16, 2008, when he found himself among 94 Mafiosi apprehended in the infamous “Operation Perseus” (Perseo in Italian). This operation, named after the Greek mythological hero Perseus, who beheaded Medusa, aimed to disrupt the reconstitution of a new Mafia Commission following the arrests of high-profile Mafia bosses, including Bernardo Provenzano, Antonio Rotolo, and Salvatore Lo Piccolo, in 2006 and 2007.

The objective behind Operation Perseus was clear – to “re-establish Cosa Nostra” in its traditional form, with a single all-powerful boss, often referred to as “capo di capi.” Capizzi’s name was among those nominated to potentially lead this Commission, surrounded by historical Cosa Nostra figures such as Gerlando Alberti, Gregorio Agrigento from San Giuseppe Jato, Giovanni Lipari, Gaetano Fidanzati, Giuseppe Scaduto from Bagheria, and the elderly Salvatore Lombardo from Montelepre. Many of these individuals had recently been released from prison on health grounds, serving their sentences under house arrest.

Amid this tumultuous backdrop, a rival emerged in the form of Gaetano Lo Presti, who had been appointed as the boss of the Porta Nuova area of Palermo in 2007 by Lo Piccolo. Lo Presti contested the decision to appoint Capizzi, igniting a power struggle within the Sicilian Mafia. His challenge echoed with the question, “Who authorized this?” – implying that he believed himself to be a more rightful contender for the top position. The prospect of renewed “Mafia wars” loomed ominously over the streets of Sicily. Fears of escalating violence led the police to expedite their actions, resulting in the Operation Perseus arrests.

The aftermath of this operation cast a long shadow over the lives of those involved. Gaetano Lo Presti, whose indiscretions on the telephone had alerted Italian police to launch the operation, tragically took his own life in his prison cell mere hours after being arrested.

In the year 2010, the turning point in Capizzi’s life arrived when Gaspare Spatuzza, a pentito or a mafia turncoat, unveiled disturbing truths. Capizzi was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his involvement in the murder of Giuseppe Di Matteo, further cementing his place within the annals of organized crime history.

As we bid farewell to Benedetto Capizzi, who passed away at the age of 79, we are left with a complex legacy. His life, marked by criminal notoriety, secrecy, and power struggles, remains a testament to the enduring allure of the Sicilian Mafia and the enigmatic figures who inhabit its shadowy realm.
