Benedetto Capizzi Cause Of Death: What Happened To Benedetto Capizzi?

Benedetto Capizzi, a name shrouded in intrigue and infamy, met his mysterious end on September 12, 2023, at the age of 79. The circumstances surrounding his death have left many questioning what transpired in the final moments of this notorious Italian mobster’s life, a man who once aspired to lead the Sicilian Mafia into a new era.

Born on June 28, 1944, Capizzi hailed from the Villagrazia area in Palermo, Sicily. His life was inextricably linked with the criminal underworld, and he rose through the ranks to become a boss of the Sicilian Mafia, earning him notoriety and respect among the criminal fraternity.

One of the pivotal chapters in Capizzi’s tumultuous life occurred on December 16, 2008, when he found himself among 94 Mafiosi apprehended in “Operation Perseus” (Perseo in Italian). This operation, aptly named after the Greek mythological hero Perseus who beheaded Medusa, aimed to thwart an audacious attempt to reconstitute a new Mafia Commission. This endeavor followed closely on the heels of the arrests of Mafia luminaries such as Bernardo Provenzano, Antonio Rotolo, and Salvatore Lo Piccolo in 2006 and 2007.

The primary objective of “Operation Perseus” was to revive the old order of Cosa Nostra, reinstating a single, all-powerful boss known as the “capo di capi.” Capizzi’s name emerged as a potential candidate for this coveted position within the Commission. Alongside him, other historical Cosa Nostra figures, including Gerlando Alberti, Gregorio Agrigento, Giovanni Lipari, Gaetano Fidanzati, Giuseppe Scaduto, and the 87-year-old Salvatore Lombardo from Montelepre, were also considered for key roles.

However, dissent simmered within the ranks. Gaetano Lo Presti, who had been appointed boss of the Porta Nuova area of Palermo in 2007 by Lo Piccolo, openly challenged Capizzi’s nomination, demanding to know, “Who authorized this?” Lo Presti’s implicit belief was that he had a stronger claim to the top position than Capizzi, igniting fears of a potential resurgence of “Mafia wars” on the streets of Sicily.

The escalating tension and apprehension of violence prompted law enforcement to accelerate their assault. This operation culminated in the arrest of 94 individuals. Tragically, Lo Presti, whose intercepted telephone conversations had played a pivotal role in the operation, took his own life in his prison cell just hours after being apprehended.

In 2010, Gaspare Spatuzza, a former member of the Mafia turned pentito (informant), implicated Capizzi in the murder of Giuseppe Di Matteo. Subsequently, Capizzi received a 30-year prison sentence for his role in the heinous crime.

With Capizzi’s passing on September 12, 2023, at the age of 79, numerous questions remain unanswered. The cause of his death, shrouded in secrecy and speculation, adds yet another layer of enigma to the life and times of this infamous Sicilian Mafia boss. As the investigation into his demise unfolds, the world waits to learn the final chapter in the story of Benedetto Capizzi, a man whose life was entwined with the darkest aspects of organized crime in Italy.
