Ben Swann Career

Swann’s first and continuing interest has been in becoming a church leader. He became a youth pastor at his local Baptist Church in Canutillo, El Paso County, Texas when he was 15 years old. He began preaching at revivals in Texas when he was 19 years old.

Unable to find work as a pastor in El Paso, he took the advice of one of his brothers and got a job in television news. Four of his brothers worked in television at the time. Three of them were news cameramen. He was employed by KDBC-TV for a time.

He moved to KFOX-TV in 1998 to work as a news cameraman. Swann returned to Fox station KFOX in El Paso as a sports producer after working as an assistant pastor in Portland, Oregon. He then began filming, editing, and reporting his own news and sports stories.

Swan joined the station as a morning co-anchor and managing editor. In 2008, he was hired as an evening news anchor for NBC affiliate KTSM-TV. In 2005 and 2009, he received regional Emmy Awards, as well as a national Edward R. Murrow Award for Continuing Coverage of Alexandra Flores in 2002.

Swann worked as an investigative journalist for the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN News) during this time, reporting on Mexico’s drug wars along the Texas border.

WXIX-TV in Cincinnati (FOX19)

He left El Paso in December 2010 to co-anchor evening TV news at Cincinnati, Ohio’s Fox affiliate WXIX-TV with Tricia Macke. Shortly after joining the station, he created a thrice-weekly news segment series called Reality Check, which he described as looking into “issues that other media isn’t looking at.”

Swann’s libertarian views and support for Ron Paul’s positions were reflected in the series. Swann’s Reality Check focused on Ron Paul’s presidential campaign, with the goal of providing more balanced coverage for Paul than the conservative or liberal national press, including an episode about racist “Ron Paul newsletters” that contradicted the findings of The New Republic columnist James Kirchick, who broke the story.

In September 2012, a particular segment of Reality Check went viral and received a lot of media attention. Swann was able to get a 7-minute one-on-one interview with President Barack Obama during an election campaign stop in Ohio, which is a rare opportunity for a local news reporter.

Swann pressed the President on the so-called presidential “kill list,” which had been used to direct drone strikes against terrorism suspects, as well as the legality of the list, which included US citizens such as Anwar al-Awlaki and his teenage son Abdulrahman al-Awlaki.

In response to Swann’s questions, Obama stated that news reports about the list had never been confirmed by him and that drone strikes in Yemen would aid in the return of US soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.

Swann’s fact-checking work on the segment was praised by several journalists and civil liberties watchdogs, including Conor Friedersdorf of The Atlantic, Glenn Greenwald of The Guardian, Byron Tau of Politico, The Huffington Post, and the Columbia Journalism Review.

Swann revealed several details about local officials at the Cincinnati IRS office involved in the IRS targeting scandal, which was picked up by national news outlets and resulted in Swann making brief appearances on Fox News. Swann announced in April 2013 that he would be leaving WXIX-TV Fox 19 at the end of May.

Truth in Media and other projects

Swann started a Facebook page called “Full Disclosure” while working at WXIX-TV, where he asked “questions about controversial subjects he says are ignored by the national media,” according to Adweek. Swann was a panelist on a third-party presidential candidates debate hosted by Larry King in Chicago, Illinois, and broadcast on C-SPAN, Al Jazeera America, and online through the sponsorship of the Free & Equal Elections Foundation on October 23, 2012. Swann started a social media channel called “Truth in Media” after leaving WXIX-TV to continue the production of his show Reality Check. Truth in Media was created in partnership with the Republican Liberty Caucus and Joshua Cook.

According to The Daily Beast, his Reality Check echoes talking points from media outlets such as RT and InfoWars. Swann’s Reality Check segments were uploaded to his YouTube channel, where they received 10,376,570 views and over 73,500 subscribers before he shut it down.

Swann used his 419,000 Facebook followers to raise funds for an episode titled “U.S. and Partners Intentionally Created ISIS” in 2017. Swann was a regular on RT America in Washington, D.C., from May 2013 to June 2015.

He hosted the Ben Swann Radio Show on the Republic Broadcasting Network for three months in 2014, which, according to media watchdog Media Matters for America, is a far-right network that has aired Holocaust denial and other antisemitic conspiracy theories.[failure to verify] [relevant?]

WGCL-TV in Atlanta (CBS46)

In June 2015, he was hired by CBS-46 affiliate WGCL-TV in Atlanta, Georgia, where he revived his fact-checking segment, Reality Check With Ben Swann, and became a member of the station’s new investigative unit.

He was suspended in January 2017 for attempting to revive the Pizzagate conspiracy theory, in which Swann called for a “investigation” into months-old false claims that a Washington, D.C. pizza restaurant was hiding a child sex trafficking ring in its non-existent basement, citing anonymous Internet users as his sources; The Atlanta Journal-Constitution noted that Swann appeared to have done no independent reporting on the topic.

He was reinstated after removing the Truth in Media and Reality Check websites. On January 29, 2018, he was fired after the station discovered that he had been attempting to resurrect Truth in Media without their knowledge or permission.

Swann’s Reality Check program “often veered into alt-right conspiracy theories,” according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Current work

Swann relaunched Truth in Media in 2018 after being fired from WGCL-TV. Beginning in 2018, he began contributing to the Liberty Nation website. Swann launched the Isegoria social media platform, which derives its name from the ancient Greek phrase “Equality of all in freedom of speech.” In 2018, he returned to RT America.
