Bebe Moore Campbell (February 18, 1950 – November 27, 2006) was the author of three New York Times bestsellers: Brothers and Sisters, Singing in the Comeback Choir, and What You Owe Me, which was also named a “Best Book of 2001” by the Los Angeles Times. Her other works include the novel Your Blues Ain’t Like Mine, which was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and won the NAACP Image Award for Literature; Sweet Summer, Growing Up With and Without My Father; and Successful Women,
Angry Men: Backlash in the Two-Career Marriage, which was her first nonfiction book. Many anthologies have published her essays, articles, and extracts. Campbell’s debut children’s book, Sometimes My Mommy Gets Angry, was released in September 2003, and it was inspired by her interest in mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Outstanding Literature Award was given to this book in 2003. The tale follows a little girl as she deals with being raised by her mentally ill mother. Ms. Campbell was a founder member of NAMI-Inglewood and a member of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. Her novel 72 Hour Hold is about mental illness as well. In June 2003, her first play, “Even with the Madness,” premiered in New York. The subject of mental illness and the family was explored in this piece. Campbell worked as a writer for The New York Times Magazine.
