Leach was raised by a single working mother who had little time for cooking in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago.
She eagerly anticipated her grandmother Betty King’s twice-yearly visits, when King would load the hob with pots of greens and her famous oxtail stew. At the same time, the oven released the lovely fragrances of her freshly prepared cornbread.
King, a native of Lexington, Mississippi, brought up her family there before relocating to Lexington in her sixties.
During her close-knit family’s traditional Fourth of July BBQ, which was incredibly joyous because it was the day before Leach’s birthday, Leach began cooking.
Because we had a large yard, everyone, aunts, uncles, and cousins, piled into my mom’s house for the BBQ get-togethers, Leach remembers.
