The daughter of drug smuggler Adler “Barry” Seal is trying to boycott a movie focused on her father’s story, Universal Image. On Wednesday, October 14, in Baton Rouge District Court, Lisa Seal Frigon lodged a complaint alleging that the rights to life stories were transferred without the permission of the court or the agreement of the house.
“Mena” is a thriller developed by Gary Spinelli and directed by Doug Liman. Seal was a hustler and pilot who was employed randomly by the CIA in the 1980s to execute one of the greatest clandestine operations in the history of the United States. He was influential in the arrest of Pablo Escobar, the late cocaine captain. The cocaine smuggler-turned-federal informant is already attached to Tom Cruise to play the lead part.
Frigon, who was born from Seal’s first marriage, said Deborah Dubois, the third wife of her father, and the children born from the marriage sold $350,000 worth of film studio rights, but not a dime went to the farm. Her counsel, Roy Maughan, claimed that Dubois had effectively robbed the money belonging to her assets. “Well, obviously, if the agreement for the life story rights of Barry Seal was not properly executed, I would think that Universal would be cautious about proceeding to a theater with the movie without making the appropriate arrangements,” Maughan said.
Frigon also found out in the lawsuit that she had checked the screenplay of the movie and that there were several inaccuracies. “It contains many factual inaccuracies and thus falsely portrays Adler Berriman Seal,”It contains many factual inaccuracies and thus falsely portrays Adler Berriman Seal. The marriage background of Seal, the depiction of him as the parent of three instead of five, his job history, the portrayal of him as a drunkard and a careless pilot, his friendship with his two eldest daughters, and the location and manner of his death are among the flaws.
Overall, the complaint threatens to block the release of the movie. It argued that the economic worth of the persona of Seal was impaired and thus the value of his estate was decreased. She is demanding unspecified settlement from Universal, Dubois and her three children. Universal has not replied to the complaint yet.
In Colombia, “Mena” has actually been shot and is set to reach theaters in 2017. In 1991, with Dennis Hopper as the lead, a TV movie was made based on Seal’s tale.
