Barack Obama is the 44th president of the United States (2009–17) and the first African American to hold the highest of office in America. Before his tenure, Barack Obama represented Illinois in the U.S Senate (2005–08). He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people in the year 2009.

Born Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4, 1961, 59 years in Hawaii. From the age of six to ten, Obama lived with his mother and stepfather in Indonesia. Barack attended Catholic and Muslim schools. Obama attended Noelani Elementary, Honolulu, Hawaii, then to St. Francis Assisi and State Elementary School, Menteng, both in Jakarta, Indonesia. He proceeded to Punahou School, Honolulu, then to Occidental College in Los Angeles and later to the Columbia University in New York City.
Obama also furthered his education at the Harvard Law School. After four years of living in New York, Obama moved to Chicago to work as a community organizer. He also worked for three years as director of the Developing Communities Project a church-based community organization. Obama worked as a consultant and instructor for the Gamaliel Foundation, a community organizing institute.
In 1988, he travelled for the first time to Europe for three weeks then to Kenya for five weeks where he met his paternal relatives for the first time. After receiving his law degree, Obama moved to Chicago and became active in the Democratic Party. He arranged for Project Vote, an initiative that registered tens of thousands of African Americans on voting rolls and that is credited with helping Democrat Bill Clinton win Illinois and capture the presidency in 1992. Obama lectured on constitutional law at the University of Chicago and worked also as an attorney on civil rights issues.
In 2008, Barack Obama became president of the U.S capturing nearly 53 per cent of the popular vote and 365 electoral votes.

Barack Obama Sr., Obama’s father, was born of Luo ethnicity in Nyanza Province, Kenya. Obama Sr. grew up herding goats in Africa and eventually earned a scholarship that allowed him to leave Kenya and pursue his dreams of going to college in Hawaii. Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, was born on an Army base in Wichita. While studying at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Obama Sr. met fellow student Ann Dunham. They married on February 2, 1961, and Barack II was born six months later.
His father left soon after his birth, and the couple divorced two years later. In 1965, his mother remarried Lolo Soetoro, a University of Hawaii student from Indonesia.
